A Tear brought a Tear

I was booked for a dinner speech for a corporate client.

The first part was my signature act as a Japanese industrialist, a personal friend and business associate of the world president of the corporation who was sharing the success strategies that helped him to create 37 companies, three of which are in Japan's Top 100.

The first part was martial arts-based inspiration, then I transformed into "Wayne", an Australian character who did a comedy routine.

The organizer had asked me to stay back in case anyone wanted to talk to me or ask questions.

An older man wearing a woollen tie, a sports coat with an RSL badge on the lapel and sporting a ridged haircut that hadn't changed since the 1940s, came over.

He looked at me hesitantly and approached as if he was wondering whether I would want to talk with him, so stepped towards him in a way that reassured him.

The old digger cleared his throat and said, in a gravelled voice that revealed decades of cigarette smoking, "You know, there's something I realized during your speech".

"What did you realize?"

"I realized that you guys are just like us."

A tear came to my eye, and I said, "Thank you".

What did it take for a man who lived through World War II, the Vietnam War and significantly The White Australian Policy, to watch the presentation, think about the attitudes to Asians that he had accumulated over the past sixty years, and actually approach an Asian person to express that sentiment?

It was a turning point for both of us.

A Surprising Treatment for Alzheimers

Computer games help Alzheimer's patients.

BARCELONA, Spain (UPI) -- Computer based tasks to increase mental activity and enhancing mental function can improve cognition in Alzheimer's patients, says a US and Spanish study.

Researchers at the Fundacio ACE, Institut Catala de Neurociencies Aplicades in Barcelona and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine conducted a study at an adult daycare Centre and referral clinic for community-dwelling persons with dementia in Barcelona.

"The interactive multimedia Internet-based system, in combination with the standard pharmacological treatment of Alzheimer's disease, provides better cognitive function in these patients, demonstrating that they are capable of benefiting from cognitive stimulations, even after the disease has advanced," said study leader Lluis Tarraga, developer of the interactive multimedia internet-based system.

"While further study is needed, it is encouraging to find that an internet-based program can work for cognitive stimulation, making it easily available and accessible to many people," according to study co-author Dr. Oscar Lopez, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The findings are published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Do I really look like him?

Over the past couple of years, a few people have either mistaken me for, or said I looked like, Robert Kiyosaki. I don't see it.

Why Iced Tea Might be Better than Hot

If you take your tea cool in the summertime, you might be doing your throat a favour. Research shows that temperature could matter when it comes to the health of you esophagus.

Drinking piping hot beverages may increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

In a study of an Iranian province that has one of the highest rates of esophageal cancer in the world, researchers found that subjects who regularly drank extremely hot tea had a higher risk of cancer - much higher than people who drank their tea just warm or lukewarm.

The theory is that regularly drinking very hot drinks could chronically irritate and inflame the esophagus, making it susceptible to carcinogens. To help reduce your risk, you might need to wait a few minutes for your tea to cool. People in the study who drank their tea less than 2 minutes after it was poured from the piping-hot kettle had a greater risk of esophageal cancer than the people who waited 4 or more minutes (enough to get it below 149 degrees Fahrenheit).
