Thank You
Thank you for the invitation to share some ideas with you at your annual event.
The opportunity to speak to different groups is always a blessing, and I'm grateful for the chance to share some concepts with Toastmasters.
In the single day since the conference ended, we have had several phone calls and emails of gratitude regarding our approach to speaking and the messages imparted. Some said that they were inspired to move to higher levels in their business and personal lives.
Some have even sought advice on moving into the professional speaking arena, and I am happy to discuss any concept with anyone who is open-minded and receptive.
The Balance When you're dealing with life-changing issues, emotionally-charged reactions are inevitable. Some concepts will polarize audiences.
Below is an email received via the website. It is copied and pasted in its entirety, unedited and without the use of SpellCheck.
"Ron, Saw you at the D70 Conference: You were extremely disappointing/rude and selfcentred presenter. How can you bring toilet humour, hitler and issue of how much peopel weigh on stage is beyoind me. By the way, nobody cares how much you make - the fact its half or more of the crowd just though you were so over the top with your selfcongratulations and achievements that we had to lauch. Seriously, next time you get an award just accept it gratciously - not take off on another routine nobody ask for - did you see the crowd leave the room - we wanted to go home and you just went on and on. Your comment about your wife should have gone like this "I am so grateful and happy to have the support...." and notwhat you said....it not about you mate its about the audience were you not paying attention to the other speakers? hope you take some these comments on board - so next time your audience are not crynging every 5 minutes - I am just sorry for Ian and Robyn for they must be feeling terrible."
This was from a person apparently named "John Smith" at Jsmith@yahoo.com. When we replied to thank him (or her) for the feedback, it bounced, so if you know John Smith, please convey our thanks.
To clarify, I was originally asked to speak for 45 minutes and was asked to cut it to 30 minutes shortly before going on, so the further shortening came as a surprise.
Your Choice
When I hear and watch a presentation, I want to be emotionally moved, to be taken on a journey and inspired by the words of a skillful presenter.
Were you affected by Ian Chick's heartfelt acceptance speech on Sunday? I was, and am grateful for seeing that side of him. Ian is, no doubt, a leader worthy of your respect.
When you watch the greatest technical actor of the 20th century, Sir Lawrence Olivier, in 'Hamlet' (1948), you admire the acting ability. In contrast, watch Al Pacino in 'Dog Day Afternoon' (1975) and you will live through every moment as if experiencing it yourself, and, in many ways, you are.
Hopefully, this has been a reminder to you that there are at least two options when approaching the construction and delivery of your speeches. There is no right or wrong; there are just alternatives.
Which type of presenter would you prefer to be?

The Final Word
Since Ralph Chesnut Smedley founded Toastmasters in Santa Ana, California in 1924, the world has significantly changed.
At that time, nobody was employed in industries associated with computers, television, space travel, or even jet-powered flight.
Communication has advanced to such a degree that an unknown, middle-aged, Scottish spinster can sing on a stage for less than three minutes and within days, was seen by 60 million people and has since become a global household name.
